Things to do in New England during the summer

No matter your summer style, New England provides the perfect backdrop for exploring your interests.

If autumn is New England's star season, then the summer is its best-kept secret. With the area’s rich history and delicious cuisine, you don’t have to be outdoorsy to enjoy the warmer weather here. No matter your summer style, New England provides the perfect backdrop for exploring your interests.

For the outdoor enthusiasts

Home to lakes, mountains and sandy shores, New England is best known as an outdoor adventurer’s playground.

  • Treat yourself to fantastic views and take a ride up to the highest peak in the Northeast on the Mount Washington Cog Railway.
  • Pack a picnic lunch and dip your toes in the ocean. Long Sands Beach in York, Maine; Jenness State Beach in Rye, New Hampshire and Plum Island Beach in Newbury, Massachusetts are local favorites.
  • Rent a kayak on the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and take in the views of Boston's skyline.

Get a lobster roll from Boston's Neptune Oyster

For the food and wine lovers

From clambakes to lobster feasts, New England’s seafood scene comes alive during the summer.

  • Beat the heat and sample freshly made batches of Vermont’s finest ice cream at the Ben & Jerry’s factory.
  • Don a bib and break out the butter at Warren’s Lobster House in Kittery, Maine, or head to Neptune Oyster in Boston for a lobster roll, another New England summertime staple.
  • Stop in LaBelle Winery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to sip and relax outside in their vineyard. They have over 35 wines you can select to try during a wine tasting with their experts.

Beacon Hill, Boston

For the historians

A hub of the American Revolution, Boston and its surrounding towns are filled with historical significance.

  • Set out along the Freedom Trail and retrace the steps of our founding fathers through historical Boston.
  • Head to nearby Lexington and Concord and see the site where the first battles of the Revolutionary War were fought.
  • Take a trip to Charlestown to visit the Bunker Hill Monument, where some of the first major battles took place during the American Revolutionary War.
