How to stay cool in Spain during the summer

If you’re traveling in Spain during the summer months of May through August, here are some tips to keep cool and enjoy your trip.

Spain is a beautiful and remarkable country to experience no matter what time of year you are visiting. When you are visiting Spain in the summer, you can expect to be welcomed by bright sun and high temperatures, especially in the south. If you are going on a tour of Spain during the summer months of May through August, make sure to remember these tips to enjoy your trip to the fullest!

1

Buy a travel fan

When you are out and about make sure you pick up a small fan, which can usually be found at any gift shop. Spaniards and tourists alike carry around fans to create a cool breeze and stave off the heat while exploring in the city.

2

Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in the summer heat. Make sure to have a bottle of water on you at all times–consider bringing a refillable water bottle, or stock up on fresh bottled water while you’re there. Also, do not miss out on trying a local lemonade stand for a cool beverage during the day.

3

Nap during the day

The warmest part of the day is mid afternoon. Start your day early morning and then take an afternoon “siesta” or nap so you are indoors during the warmest hours. Even locals take time to go inside and rest during the afternoon before they head out again later in the evening when it has cooled down. (Just in time for tapas!)

4

Don’t forget to use sunscreen

Just because you are not on a beach doesn’t mean you should forget about protecting your skin! When walking around in a Spanish city, make sure to lather up (and reapply every couple of hours) so you don’t get a sunburn.

5

Wear a hat

When exploring Spain’s cities, a hat will help keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes. Use this as an opportunity to pop into a local store and pick out a stylish TBD!

6

Find a rooftop bar for a drink

On a rooftop, you will feel more of an elusive breeze and it is a great spot to see the summer sunset. Indulge in a glass of fresh sangria or tinto de verano, a refreshing sip that’s made with red wine and lemon soda.

7

Indulge in cool desserts

Don’t hesitate to try the local flavors at a sweet gelato shop; you will pass by many as you are sightseeing.

8

Go to the beach

Summer is the perfect time to relax on one of Spain’s beaches and take a dip in the ocean! Try out the black sand beach in Malaga or rent a beach chair and towel at a beach in Barcelona.
